Position Overview
The Director of Education and Programs is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing dynamic and engaging educational and public programs that enhance the visitor experience and promote lifelong learning in the fields of history and science. Serving audiences from toddlers to elders, this role requires collaboration with museum staff, community partners, and stakeholders to create mission-driven, community-focused programs relevant to diverse audiences. The Director will supervise education staff and volunteers, manage program budgets, and evaluate the effectiveness of educational initiatives.

Essential Functions
Program Development and Implementation
- Design, develop, and implement educational programs, workshops, camps, lectures, and events that align with the museum’s mission.
- Integrate inquiry-based, hands-on learning experiences and technology to enhance engagement and learning outcomes.
- Create educational materials such as curriculum guides, lesson plans, multimedia resources, and digital content.
- Collaborate with staff and external partners to develop exhibits related to history, science, and cultures of the Black Hills.
- Ensure programs and content are inclusive, culturally relevant, and aligned with best practices in museum education.
Community Collaboration and Outreach
- Build and maintain partnerships with schools, universities, community groups, and cultural institutions.
- Work with curators, scientists, historians, and professionals to ensure accuracy and educational value.
- Develop outreach strategies to engage diverse segments of the local community.
- Represent the museum at community events, conferences, and public meetings.
Staff and Volunteer Management
- Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers, interns, and part-time educators.
- Provide ongoing feedback, coaching, and professional development.
Budget and Resource Management
- Develop and oversee the education department’s budget.
- Identify and pursue funding opportunities through grants, sponsorships, and donations.
Evaluation and Reporting
- Implement evaluation tools to assess program effectiveness.
- Collect and analyze data to guide program improvements.
- Prepare and present reports to internal and external stakeholders.
Requirements
Preferred Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Museum Studies, History, Science, or a related field.
- 3–5 years of experience in education, public history, science communication, or a similar field.
- Strong understanding of educational theory and museum education practices.
- Experience with program development, budgeting, and staff supervision.
- Grant writing and fundraising experience preferred.
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required.

Working Conditions
- Environment: Primarily within a museum setting, including offices, classrooms, exhibit halls, and outdoor spaces. Occasional travel to schools and other venues is required.
- Physical Requirements: Must be able to stand for extended periods, move throughout the museum, lift up to 50 lbs, and assist with handling items weighing up to 250 lbs. Requires the ability to drive a museum vehicle.
- Schedule: Flexibility to work weekends and evenings as required by programming.
