Description
The Director of Field Services and Lifelong Learning plays a key role in the Utah Division of Arts & Museums (UA&M) leadership team, providing strategic input and direction. The Director is responsible for developing and implementing statewide programming to support museums, lifelong learning, arts and wellness initiatives, and ensure program initiatives align with the UA&M strategic plan, promote best practices, and encourage preservation of Utah’s diverse material culture among Utah’s museums.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership and Oversight:
Serve as part of the leadership team, providing input and direction for the Field Services team. Specifically work strategically with long-standing partners Utah Humanities and Utah Historical Society.
Ensure program initiatives align with the UA&M strategic plan.
Oversee assigned program areas, including annual plans, timelines, and budgets.
Evaluate current and future programs with the Leadership Team.
Bring recommendations for new programs, funding, or policies to the Director and Deputy Director.
Develop and manage external partnerships, such as Utah Humanities and the Utah Historical Society
Participate in the Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) Emergency Succession Team.
Leverage community relationships and partnerships to provide high-quality technical assistance.
Support staff in their development and professional development and ensure their program success. Supervise and coordinate team members' efforts, including hiring, training, and performance evaluation.
Support grant development and external funding opportunities aligned with division programs (e.g., NEH, IMLS, foundation support).
Field Services Outreach, Communication, and Coordination:
Lead and assist in planning and implementing field services outreach and engagement efforts with team and outside partners, consultants, and constituents. Coordinate with existing partner organizations such as Utah Humanities and Utah Historical Society to align preservation training, field services, and capacity building for Utah's museum community.
Lead and assist in planning and implementing arts and wellness planning and outreach efforts with team and outside partners, consultants, and constituents.
Provide coordinated communication, technical assistance, and field services to Utah’s 250 museums.
Develop and maintain consistent and reliable public-facing communication and engagement, including newsletter publication, website editing and development, and social media.
Oversee constituent databases, directories, and surveys.
Statewide travel is required.
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications:
Demonstrated supervisory and leadership experience.
Previous experience as a museum professional in operations, administration, interpretation, and/or education.
Demonstrated experience in project management and leading collaborative efforts.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
Preferred qualifications:
High level of knowledge and best professional practice within museum management, collections, education, and preservation.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in museum field services and arts education.
Knowledge of collections stewardship, rural museum capacity building, and heritage preservation best practices.
