New Mexico Arts is the state arts agency and a division of the Department of Cultural Affairs. The 15-member governor-appointed New Mexico Arts Commission serves as our advisory body. Our primary function is to provide financial support for arts services and programs to nonprofit organizations statewide and to administer the 1% public art program for the state of New Mexico.
The Folk Arts and ADA Coordinator ensures compliance with the National Endowment for the Arts' requirement to support Folk Arts Programming in New Mexico, by perpetuating and expanding knowledge of Traditional Folk Arts practiced in the state. The position provides research and advances the field through leadership at the state level; supports Traditional Folk Arts Projects presented by organizations; and develops and supports Traditional Folk Arts Master Artists and Apprentices to ensure that these art forms are passed on and protected. The position resides in Santa Fe and is responsible for project management of Folk Arts activities, reporting to the National Endowment for the Arts, scope development, program coordination, and other annual duties to support the program. In addition, the position provides resources and serves as the point of contact for Accessibility-related issues for the division.
Requirements
The position develops guidelines and manages all aspects of grant making for the Traditional Folk Arts Projects funding category and Master Apprenticeship Program, including outreach to nonprofits and Master Folk Artists to ensure program goals are met. The position provides technical assistance to eligible applicants and secures grant review panelists; and provides key contract management duties; prepares contracts; develops and maintains online application processes; tracks program reporting; and manages program invoices and final reports. The position represents the division and the state of New Mexico and ensures that identified program goals and policies are in line with the Agency's legal counsel and broader division goals and objectives.
The position is tasked with fieldwork, research, outreach, and publications; develops scopes of service and manages professional service contracts for identified projects. The position facilitates public meetings, presentations, and educational events with stakeholders both in-person and virtually. The position coordinates and executes an outreach plan to expand program awareness and increase program participation; and develops and updates all related Folk Arts content for distribution in various formats, including the agency's website. The position demonstrates regional and national expertise in Folk Arts by participating in peer networks in the western states and nationally and is responsible for tracking and maintaining all required Folk Arts Program records and preparing all required reports for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) as part of our state partnership agreement. The position also serves as the ADA Coordinator, developing Accessibility programs to help comply with our state partnership agreement with the NEA, including filing timely reporting to the NEA; developing scopes of service and managing professional service contracts for identified projects to ensure the execution of Accessibility program goals.
The position serves nonprofits, government entities, and individual artists and other New Mexico residents. The coordinator will work in-depth with individual Traditional Folk Artists in New Mexico, nonprofit arts organizations and/or other entities presenting Traditional Folk Arts Projects in New Mexico. Program partners will include sister department agencies, New Mexico organizations, and national educational and cultural institutions. The position also responds to queries and provides resources for arts organizations and participants in Agency programs.
The ideal candidate will have a degree in Folk Arts or related field. Demonstrated experience and/or passion for working with traditional artists and art forms in diverse communities. Understanding of regional and New Mexico urban, rural, and Tribal communities and the Traditional Folk Arts practiced in the region. Experience working in Folk Arts, government, and institutional settings. Strong background in conducting Folk Arts and cultural fieldwork is preferred. Project management experience with strong reading and writing skills is preferred. Presentation/Meeting management experience is preferred. Strong attention to detail is needed. The candidate will have experience in Accessibility work and/or demonstrated interest in developing Accessibility expertise.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's Degree and three (3) years program administration or project management in areas related to the purpose of the position.
