Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Curator of Education and Outreach (Head of Learning and Community Engagement) for the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:
- Provides leadership, direction, and coordination for the Zimmerli Art Museum’s Department of Learning and Community Engagement (currently the Education Department).
- Handles the research, development, planning, implementation, administration, and evaluation of all educational programs for Rutgers students, faculty, staff, and members of neighboring communities.
- Ensures that the museum is an active participant in both the Rutgers and greater New Brunswick communities, and that the museum’s programs enhance and enrich the works of art in the permanent collection and in temporary exhibitions while upholding its values of diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion.
- Works closely with the museum’s director, and as a member of the senior management team.
- Acts as an ambassador for the museum, initiating and sustaining collaborative partnerships with academic departments, student organizations, local schools, and community organizations serving a diverse range of disciplines and interests.
Requirements
Minimum Education and Experience
- Masters degree in art history, education, fine arts, humanities, or a closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least three (3) years of experience in an advanced position in an arts or cultural institution, leading/designing educational programs for culturally diverse audiences.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Demonstrated commitment to inclusive and equitable practices and expanding access.
- Knowledge of and enthusiasm about a wide variety of visual arts.
- Special interest in the place of the visual arts in civic life and in the engagement of diverse communities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present information in a variety of formats, to understand and present information to a broad audience base, and to communicate the museum’s mission with passion and sensitivity.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to work well with colleagues, other employees, faculty, students, donors, lenders, and artists.
- Record of strong management and analytic skills, both strategic and operational.
- Familiarity and experience with relevant computer programs and social media platforms.
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum of five years of experience in an advanced position in an arts or cultural institution, leading/designing educational programs for culturally diverse audiences.
Special Conditions
- Requires some evenings and weekend hours.
