Description
The Bruce Museum seeks a Museum Educator to join its Audience Engagement Department. This is a newly created position, responsible for designing and leading hands-on educational programs for students from early childhood through high school. The Museum Educator will have a special focus on the Museum’s afterschool programs with community partners, and Saturday family programming.
The Bruce Museum is seeking a highly motivated, energetic team player with a love of hands-on STEAM education and project-based learning. The Museum Educator reports to the Manager of School and Community Partnerships. This is a full-time (35 hours/week), non-exempt position with a Tuesday-Saturday schedule with a typically one-hour, unpaid lunch break. Start and end times will vary each day to accommodate staffing needs at programs and events. Occasional work on Sundays and Mondays may be required.
Responsibilities:
- Teach onsite and offsite school, afterschool, and family programs including birthday parties.
- Lead STEAM programs at the Bruce Museum and at outreach locations for community partners.
- Learn about the Museum’s permanent collection and temporary exhibitions.
- Set-up and clean-up after programs take place.
- Check supplies and prep materials for upcoming programs.
- Attend specific training sessions to learn about museum exhibitions and collections.
- Assist with program material preparation, recruitment events and meetings for specific initiatives.
- Assist with large-scale evening and weekend events, like family days and lectures, as necessary by preparing and assisting with hands-on activities, registration, set-up, and clean-up.
- Perform other tasks related to job or Audience Engagement.
Requirements
Recommended Education, Experience, Knowledge, & Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in art, science, cultural history, education, museum studies or a related field required.
- 1-3 years of experience working in a museum, nature center, cultural organization, or comparable experience in a related institution.
- Teaching experience, particularly with children, is required.
- Teaching experience with elementary and pre-kindergarten students is preferred.
- Understanding of the basic tenants of STEAM pedagogical theory.
- Valid driver's license and ability to operate Museum vehicles and travel to off-site locations as needed.
- Traits: honesty, integrity, outgoing personality, friendliness, able to work under pressure, organized, attention to detail, positive attitude, eager to contribute to a team effort, ability to meet deadlines, self-starting, flexible, patient, and sense of humor.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
- Work is normally performed onsite in a museum setting in a workshop, exhibition, etc. and/or in offsite educational spaces in schools, offices, community centers, etc.
- Prolonged periods moving throughout the teaching spaces (onsite or offsite) without a break.
- Unattended mobility required in object handling.
- Ability to regularly move/transport and utilize teaching materials and accompanying equipment weighing from 10lbs to 25lbs each.
- Must be available to work during the following peak periods:
- October 12 to December 22
- April 12 to June 18
- Any extenuating circumstances beyond employee’s control requiring an absence will be reviewed individually for approval.
